Madrid-Barajas Airport has already exceeded its annual capacity. According to Aena, the airport has reached the limit of what it can accommodate during peak hours, restricting further traffic growth until a potential future expansion becomes a reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The possibility of developing a second airport should also be considered as part of the decision-making process, beyond Aena's own strategic interests. This is not a new concept. In 2013, the Regional Government of Madrid had already developed a preliminary project and approved an Airport Master Plan for a new airport to be located in the southwest of the region. The proposed airport was intended to accommodate general aviation and flight training activities following the planned closure of Cuatro Vientos, as well as corporate aviation, which at that time operated from Torrej\u00f3n. It was also envisaged as a means of relieving congestion at Madrid-Barajas Airport. Consequently, the project was both well justified and at an advanced stage of development, particularly considering the complexity of obtaining approval for an Airport Master Plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, a private initiative is seeking to revive this concept. However, to maximise its chances of success, it would need to build upon some of the key achievements and planning milestones of the original project.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
